WHAT ARE FRESH MACADAMIA NUTS?
Often hailed as the "Queen of Nuts" due to their exceptional nutritional value, macadamia nuts are a true superfood. Today, let’s explore what fresh macadamia nuts are, as well as their nutritional benefits and impact on health. Macadamia nuts are not only a delicious snack but also a source of vital nutrients.

1. What are fresh macadamia nuts?

Fresh macadamia nuts are defined as follows:
Originally a wild fruit, macadamias were domesticated and cultivated on a large scale by farmers. On the tree, the nut features a smooth, glossy green outer husk; inside lies a hard, wood-like brown shell protecting an ivory-white kernel—which is the edible part of the nut.
After harvesting, farmers remove the green husk, leaving behind the brown-shelled nut. This is the product that farmers or processing facilities can then process and store for the long term, depending on the intended use. The brown shell acts as a protective layer, allowing the nuts to be stored for up to 12 months—lasting until the next harvest season.
Common processing methods include:
• Drying in high-capacity electric ovens: This is the most common method used by facilities for large-scale processing and long-term storage.
• Roasting over a wood fire.
• Roasting using an electric stove or air fryer.
• Fresh kernels: In this method, the kernel is removed from the shell and frozen for long-term use. This approach is ideal for baking or making nut milk, as it preserves the macadamia nut's full nutritional value.

2. Key characteristics of fresh macadamia nuts

A defining characteristic of fresh macadamia nuts is that they are harvested only after the nuts have fully matured. You can test for maturity by peeling back the green husk; if the inner husk and the nut itself are dark brown, the nut is mature and ready for harvest.
Fresh nuts have very high moisture content and cannot be stored in large quantities in that state. Therefore, the most common practice is to dry them using high-capacity electric ovens. Drying for 3–4 days at temperatures between 50°C and 90°C gradually reduces moisture while fully preserving nutritional value. Once the moisture content drops to 0–5%, the nuts can be stored in a cool warehouse for up to 12 months.
Macadamia nuts are high in oil; if they are overheated or insufficiently dried, the oil can separate (go rancid). Nuts that have released their oil lose their flavor and cannot be stored for long periods.

3. How to use macadamia nuts

• Raw macadamia nuts: After removing the brown shell, the kernels can be used to make nut milk or mixed with other nutritious nuts to provide a wealth of health benefits. Store them in the freezer for gradual use.
• Dried macadamia nuts: This is the most common and easiest-to-store variety. Even after drying, they retain their full nutritional value, including healthy fats, iron, and magnesium.
• They can be used in dishes such as salads or mixed with fruit.
• They can be combined with other nuts, oats, and granola to create healthy meals rich in plant-based healthy fats.
• They are used in confectionery and macadamia chocolate production.
Macadamia nuts are highly nutritious and are known as the "Queen of Nuts." Doctors recommend them as a source of healthy plant-based fats for the body. Excellent for pregnant women and children, these nuts provide essential nutrients for both mother and baby while avoiding unhealthy fats.
Consuming 5–8 nuts daily provides a healthy energy boost, supplying beneficial fats and other micronutrients [see TNMACCA nutritional chart]. However, moderation is key; consuming the right amount ensures optimal nutritional benefits without excessive fat or oil intake.

4. Where to buy fresh macadamia nuts

TNMACCA sources fresh macadamia nuts directly from farmers. Before purchasing, the company rigorously inspects the quality of the fresh nuts—ensuring they are free from mold and stem defects—to guarantee the best results during the drying process. High-quality nuts are characterized by intact green husks and the absence of mold or stem-end rot. TNMACCA carefully selects the harvest, checking for pest damage and fungal issues before processing, as a high incidence of pests or mold can compromise the quality of the entire batch during long-term storage.
Macadamia trees thrive in cool, breezy climates. Popular growing regions include the provinces of Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, and Son La. However, the Tuy Duc (Dak Nong) and Krong Nang (Dak Lak) regions are particularly highly regarded for the quality, sweetness, and rich, buttery flavor of their nuts. These two regions serve as the primary sources for TNMACCA’s processing and year-round supply.

5. Price of fresh macadamia nuts

The price of fresh macadamia nuts is a topic of great interest; as a delicious, highly nutritious nut with limited supply, market prices have remained relatively stable over the years. The crop is easy to cultivate and maintain, offering farmers high and stable economic returns. During the annual harvest season (June to September), the price of fresh macadamia nuts is approximately 70,000–90,000 VND/kg, depending on quality and nut size.
Dried macadamia nuts range from 159,000 to 280,000 VND/kg, depending on size, quality, and quantity.
Dried macadamia kernels range from 380,000 to 550,000 VND/kg.
Macadamia nut prices depend on various factors, including nut size, quality, quantity, and market supply and demand throughout the year. As the year draws to a close and the Lunar New Year approaches, when production...
