Macadamia nuts have a hard, wood-like brown outer shell; therefore, the shell must be broken to access the kernel inside. There are various methods for cracking this hard shell, such as using a hammer, a knife, an industrial sawing machine, or a manual cracking machine. Today, I will guide you on how to crack macadamia nuts using a manual cracking machine.

1.    Preparing the macadamia nuts

Before manual processing, the macadamia nuts have already undergone cleaning, preliminary processing, drying, and storage. Nuts that have been properly sealed and remain in their original state—showing no signs of rancidity or mold—are ready for processing.
Depending on the facility and customer requirements, the nuts are sorted by size using a grading machine. This process categorizes them into uniform sizes: small, medium, and large.
Place the macadamia nuts into a basket.

2.    Cleaning and checking the manual cracking machine

Since this is a manual machine requiring operator skill, the machine must be checked before use to ensure it is well-lubricated and operating smoothly, and that the cracking blade is sharp enough to split the nuts effectively.
A light source is used to easily spot any rotten or damaged nuts during the cracking process.

3.    Tools required for cracking macadamia nuts

As the process is manual, the operator needs to prepare specific tools:
•    Baskets for raw macadamia nuts and finished products
•    A basket for broken shells
•    A basket for the finished kernels

4.    The process of cracking macadamia nuts using the machine

The operator must be skilled, focused, and meticulous. Because the work is manual, the operator must handle each nut individually and place it into the cracking slot. The goal is to crack the shell just enough to allow for opening with a tool, while minimizing the risk of the shell splitting completely in two.
During the cracking process, the operator must simultaneously inspect the kernel gap for signs of rot, insect damage, or mold in order to discard defective nuts.
Once the cracked macadamia nuts are ready, they can be packaged in 5kg vacuum-sealed bags, or in 500g vacuum-sealed packs placed inside paper boxes.

5.    Points to note when using a machine to crack macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts have hard shells; therefore, the operator must exercise extreme care, meticulousness, and focus during the processing work.
Operators should carefully inspect the nuts during processing to sort them and remove those affected by pests or mold, ensuring efficiency and optimal processing time.
The cracking process requires skill and concentration to create a crack wide enough to inspect for defects without splitting the nut in half.

6.    How to store cracked macadamia nuts

Cracked macadamia nuts represent the final processed product and can be packaged according to specific needs.
Vacuum-sealing in 5kg packs is the best preservation method, as it prevents the product from spoiling quickly.
Smaller 500g packs can be vacuum-sealed, boxed, or placed in zip-lock bags.
Store macadamia nuts in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight.

Globally—particularly in Australia and China—high-capacity sawing machines are used to optimize labor; these machines can process two to three times the volume of manual methods per hour.
The advantages of this method include a one-time investment, labor optimization, reduced costs, speed, uniformity, and a lower risk of the nuts splitting in half. However, the major drawback of this method is that machine-based splitting does not allow for visual inspection to remove defective or fungus-infested seeds; furthermore, the sawing process turns the woody shell into sawdust that adheres to the seed, creating an unsightly appearance and contaminating the seed with shell dust.
